Acrylics. February 2016. I am coming to the realization that I prefer to do abstracts more than realistic painting. I love the freedom of abstracts gives. I love how a painting will intuitively lead me. For instance in this painting, my intention from the get go was to painting something to do with "Edges" and that is NOT how it turned out! In fact, the numbers you see on the side represent the alphabet spelling out "edges"! A ladder form appeared and I went with it. I am really happy with how it turned out!

'14 Gallery - Learning From Matisse
Acrylics. January 2014. Taking an on-line mixed media workshop from Jeanne Oliver called "Studying Under the Masters". This week's lesson is on Matisse. The painting I picked to replicate is called "Ballet Dancer Seated on a Stool". I learned a lot from this excercise! I had to do several layers in order to capture the color combinations that Matisse had going in his painting even though it seemed pretty simple and straight forward. Also, I learned that Matisse was definitely a graphic in his composition. For instance, the bold black outline on the right side of the dancer. It's not realistic, but it definitely makes her stand out and it works with his painting!

To be honest, I didn't like the pressure of being an artist and painting amongst a bunch of a lot of women! So, it showed and I wasn't happy with my results. This painting is a revised one with my style, my way(lol).

I have been so inspired of her story and her paintings that I thought I'd try my hand at painting her, keeping her style in mind. Bold and loose was my mission! I love how she turned out! Acrylics. March 2014 What a boring name for a painting, right? For me, that is the worse part about painting-coming up with a "title" for your piece. The piece speaks for itself. Acrylics & water soluble pencil. April 2014. In this painting, I just used a stabilo pencil and titanium white acrylic paint. I love to be able to use just these two things to create such a great range of values. For some reason, Gierma looks older in this painting, like he's 18! For the life of me, I could not figure out what it is that made him look older!

Acrylics & Collage Ephemera. September 2014 Buna is the amharic word for COFFEE! I just finished this painting for Ethiopia Reads' "Ethiopian Odyssey" coming up October 22, here in Denver. Along with other paintings by differents artists, it will be auctioned off to raise money for Ethiopia Reads. The word "jebena" written on the background, is the word for this tradistional ethiopian coffee pot. The amharic word written to the left of the jebena in red is "buna". On the jebena, I've painting the amharic word "selam" which means peace. The ethiopian coffee ceremony is a beautiful thing. I feel the coffee ceremony respresents Ethiopia well. It is a time of fellowship. It is a time to share. It is a time to take in the moment. What a fantastic way to celebrate life with friends and the best tasting coffee!

Logo Design. April 2014. In February, my dear friend, Kate Frost, hired me to design her new business logo. It was a pleasure working with Kate on this project. It makes it so much easier when designer and client are in sync! I designed her logo, business cards, note cards, stationery and stickers. We found out the hard way that printers do NOT like gradients! Glad we kept to our guns because I think the logo looks terrific with it!!

Oilsticks & Collage Ephemera. April 2013. Here is a self-portrait I painted with Shiva oil sticks. They are different from oil pastels because they are about 4" x 3/4" big! So, it is challenging to get too detailed-which is a good thing for me. The really cool thing about the oil sticks are that it feels like you are painting with butter, they are so smooth!!

'13 & Before - Nisei, Second Generation
Acrylics & Collage Ephemera. March 2013. Nisei, in japanese, means second generation. That is what my mother and her siblings were-the second generation of Japanese-Americans. I actually finished this piece before I did my first oil painting. I took an old black and white photo of my mom, aunt and uncle when they were young and painted from that. My grandfather was a portrait photographer and took the photo. The background is of collage japanese papers and journaling that I did. For me, it was a real milestone to capture the essence of loved ones.

Acrylics & collage ephemera. January 2015 After all the holiday celebrations, I took a moment to just sit outside in the sun. My doctor recommended I get more vitamin D, so that's just what I did! I took a moment to really enjoy the sunshine and the beautiful snow on the ground. I contemplated why I love snow so much. This is what I found; I love how calming snow is to me. When things get overwhelming for me, I can rest in the comfort of snow. Snow simplifies and purifies everything. It grounds me to reveal in it's beauty.

Acrylics & water soluble pencil. January 2015. Our good friend, Reggie, asked me to paint a portrait of his son for his wife's birthday. I was thrilled for the opportunity! The past year, I've been working on my portrait rendering skills and I've been happy with my progress so far. So, I felt confident going into this project. Let me tell you, it was a humbling challenge for me! For some reason, I could not get the portrait to where it was looking like Malik!!! I spent a lot of time trying tweak the painting. Lesson: sometimes you'll have it easy and sometimes not! Just keep on going.

What I can do is be aware of their presence in other objects and paint what I feel. Happy Birthday, Morgan. I love you so much. His birthday is March 5th. I finished this painting a week afterwards and just now getting around to posting.

'15 Gallery - Evolving
Acrylics & collage ephemera. March 2015 Here is another painting I finished in March called "Evolving". At first glance, it just looks like layers of different colors. There is a story behind this: Red layer represents my earlier life with Wiley, Morgan and Parker. Red had always been my favorite color. Some of the collaged papers are of Wiley's aviation maps, Morgan's drawing of a race car and Parker's practice of writing "U"s. When I would tell Morgan and Parker, "I love you", they would reply, "You!" Black layer represents the devastating lose of Wiley, Morgan and Parker. I etched in a heartbeat that stops along the way. White layer represents a very deep period of grieving where all I knew of myself died along with my family. Blue layer represents meeting Steve, the love of my life. He brought color back to my life and feeling (hence the texture). Purple layer represents where I am now in my life. My past life and present life creates a new color for me, purple. Dragonflies have always been special to me. They symbolize change and self realization. The dragonfly has the different colored chapters in my life on its wings. The kanji symbol is for "evolve". Even though my painting looks simplistic to the unknowing eye, it has very deep meaning expressing more with colors, shapes and textures than words could ever convey.

'15 Gallery - Kurt Schwitters Inspired Collage
Since I love collage so much, I've been reading up on important "collagists" in art history. Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948) work caught my eye. He would take everyday ephemara and make them into beautiful collages, a new medium at the time. Schwitters is also credited for his pioneering contribution to installation art and found object artwork. I took text from magazines and created my own collage reflecting modern day type and advertising.

Acrylic ink & paints. April 2015 Playing with acrylic inks in an intuitive way, these crazy looking jellyfish appeared! I am kind of fascinated with these translucent alien beings. They are such interesting creatures. Painting loosely like this is so out of my comfort zone, yet it was very meditative to paint. It's actually my artistic goal this year to paint more intuitively. Let's see where it takes me!

'15 Gallery - Spanish Poppy field
Acrylics. May 2015. I've been reading up on what wabi-sabi is: it is a Japanese term that means finding beauty in the imperfect and weathered nature. So to apply the wabi-sabi to my art, I wanted to use colors I see in nature and use a certain kind of intuition. While wondering what my next painting would be next, poppies kept coming to mind. I vividly remember the beautiful poppy fields in Spain. There is something about poppies I just love. With a photo for reference and keeping the wabi-sabi style in mind, this is what came of it. I like how loose I was able to paint this way.

Diarama Ephemera. May 2015. I have an affinity for the dias de los meuertos celebration. I love the fact that Mexicans celebrate the deceased in a festive, rejoicing way. Thinking of Wiley, Morgan and Parker being part of this big party in the afterlife gives me a feeling of peace and happiness for them. For my sister, Val's birthday, I made her a dias de los muertos birthday diorama! Val loves to make dioramas, so I thought I'd try my hand at it for her.

Oils & Cold Wax. May 2015. I have discovered a new medium - cold wax! I've always been interested in doing encaustics but haven't just because you need good ventilation. With cold wax, it's not necessary because you are not heating up pigment with the wax. So, I'm loving experimenting with this awesome discovery!

Acrylics & water soluble pencil. April 2014 In this painting, I just used a stabilo(water soluble) pencil and titanium white acrylic paint. I love to be able to use just these two things to create such a great range of values. For some reason, Gierma looks older in this painting, like he's 18! For the life of me, I could not figure out what it is that made him look older!

'19 Gallery - VORTEX
16” X 12” Oils & Cold Wax 2019. Being an artist who uses color 99% of the time, I love how this black and white painting turned out. The challenge of not using color forced me to focus on just black and white. Thinking it would be limiting, it made me realized the possibilities are endless even without color present.

'19 Gallery - MIDNIGHT SERENADE
12” X 16” Oils & Cold Wax 2019. My challenge for this painting was to have it mainly low key meaning the majority of it is dark colors. Most of my paintings tend to be high or mid key in tonal range. It’s good to get out of your comfort zone! I love the magical aura of this painting and how serene it is.

12” X 16” Oils & Cold Wax 2019. I really enjoy painting with dioxazine purple and cadmium green. Add grey and I just love how these colors look with each other. While intuitively creating this piece, images of links became apparent. I liken it to the saying, “We are all connected”.
